In dogs, calluses on the elbow appear like abnormal growths with elephant-like skin surfaces. These calluses usually develop on the elbow and other bony projections of the joints in the hips, sternum, and hock. They’re usually caused by frequently lying on hard surfaces. What are Dog Elbow Calluses?

Basically, elbow calluses develop mostly around the elbow area and sometimes hocks (back legs). These calluses are dry, scaly, hairless and firm. Some calluses are dark brown and black, and others are gray; it depends on your dog’s skin and how long your dog has had a callus. Just like humans, calluses are caused by skin coming into contact with something rough or hard repeatedly. Over time, rough skin forms and, if left untreated, become a callus.

Some pet owners refer to dog calluses as pressure sores, but I think there’s a huge difference. If left untreated, some dog elbow calluses will crack and bleed, causing a lesion (sore). If a pressure sore is left untreated, it will likely become infected.

Care for and Prevent Dog Elbow Callus

• Moisturizers and elbow balms can be applied generously on the callus to help lock in moisture and keep it well-moisturized. Be sure that your dog cannot lick off the ointment or cream as this can lead to severe stomach upset.
• Petroleum jelly is tried and true; it will soften most calluses pretty quickly. Generously apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to your dog’s calluses and rub it in. Massaging the product into calluses is an important step. You need to reach all areas of a callus, and not just the top surface area. Apply every 12 hours for a week, and then keep the area soft with daily applications.
• Provide soft bedding for your dog. Place it in areas of your home where it’s cold. You may have noticed your dog loves to lie down on tiles or hardwood floors. Placing the soft bedding on any of these areas can help ensure that he will lay on the bed instead of on the floor.
• Supplement your pet’s diet with vitamin E. It’s rich in antioxidants that combat free radicals and promotes skin healing.
• Provide adequate opportunities for physical activity and exercise so your dog won’t spend a lot of time being a couch potato.
• Make a habit of checking your pet’s elbow callus to make sure it’s not bleeding or ulcerated.
• Wear a sleeve or elbow brace to protect the area.
